Does diet have anything to do with Vitiligo?

The diet of a vitiligo patient can reduce the rate of pigmentation growth tremendously. Vitiligo is considered to be an autoimmune disease by scientists. When a vitiligo patient follows a healthy diet and the do’s and don’ts of it, the pigmentation growth rate slows down. 

Vitiligo Diet – What to Eat & What to Avoid

What to Eat:

  • Vegetables – Chickpeas, carrot, beetroot, radish, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, and green beans. 
  • Fruits – Figs and apricots.
  • Protein – Chickpeas, Mushrooms, and lentils. 
  • Grains – Oats, white rice, brown rice, millet, and corn.
  • Beverages – Coconut water, green tea, and vegetable juices. 
  • Supplements – Vitamin B12, protein, calcium, and minerals (as per the advice of your dermatologist). 
  • Spices & Herbs – Coriander, basil, thyme, clove, black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom. 

What to Avoid:

  • Vegetables – Onions, garlic, green chilies, and tomatoes.
  • Fruits – Avoid taking any fruit which is rich in Vitamin C, like orange, pineapple, lemon, grapes, melon, papaya, watermelon, grapefruit, guava, and pear.
  • Protein – Do not consume beef, pork, or fish for protein. Sticking to a vegetarian diet is better. 
  • Grains – One can have all types of grains in small quantities; however, oats and millets are healthiest. 
  • Beverages – Canned or packaged fruit juices, soda drinks, fizz drinks, juices of fruits rich in vitamin C, and alcohol. 
  • Supplements – Depends on the patients. 
  • Spices & Herbs – Turmeric.
  • Others – Wafers, chocolates, pickles, oily food, spicy food, or canned food items.

2 Dosas Made of Soy and Wheat

1 Cup Onion and Coriander Filled Boiled Chickpeas 4 Chapatis

½ Cup Bottle Gourd Dal

A Green Vegetable of Choice

A Cup of Green Tea with 2-4 Finger Millet Biscuits 3 Chapatis

1 Cup Rice

½ Cup Cooked Cauliflower

A Small Bowl of Vegetable Salad

Wednesday 1 Cup Tea or 1 Glass Toned Milk

1 ½ Cup of Roasted Upma (Oats) With Vegetables, Like Green Peas, Carrots, Potatoes, and so on. 

2 Moong Dal Cheela 2 Millet Chapatis

A Cup of Brown Rice

½ Cup Fenugreek (methi) Dal

A Green Vegetable of Choice

A Cup of Green Tea

A Bowl of Sprouted and Boiled Green Grams

3 Chapatis

1 Cup Rice

½ Cup Cooked Lady Finger

Thursday 1 Cup Tea or 1 Glass Toned Milk

4 Idlis

Saturday 3 Ragi Dosas 1 Medium Sized Glass of Soya Milk with 1-2 Oats Biscuits 4 Wheat Chapatis

Small Fist of Dry Fruits (Peanuts, Raisins, Almonds, and Walnuts)

2 Chapatis

1 Cup Rice

½ Cup Cooked Bottle Gourd

Sunday 1 Cup Tea or 1 Glass Toned Milk

Paratha (With Stuffing of Choice; Like Potato, Cauliflower, Radish)

1 Roasted Laddu Made of Blackgrams 2 Wheat Chapatis

½ Cup Dal with Cabbage

A Cup of Green Tea with 2-4 Any Multigrain Biscuit 3 Chapatis

½ Cup Cooked Ridge Gourd

Additional Information

As for Vitiligo, there is no treatment as of now. The patients can, however, use various treatments that are available for hiding patches and feeling confident.
